Storm Damage

Last month we had some storms that were not so nice to trees--one day driving through Almont half the town had lost it's power due to a downed tree, and driving home the back way from work one day we had to backtrack because of a tree across the road. In our downtown when you cross the bridge, you get a really nice view of the River Raisin. Downstream there was a huge tree in the middle of the river (previously blogged about in Funny/Fail Signs post). Unfortunately, it seems that that tree has also been a victim to a summer storm.

It might be a little hard to tell (I took the picture on my iphone, which takes really low quality photos), but the whole root system is coming out of the water. :(

I Love Scott Pilgrim!

So, I've heard that Scott Pilgrim vs. The World isn't doing so well in the movie theaters, and I don't understand why! The movie--although departs from the graphic novels a bit--is fricken awesome! And the graphic novels are also fricken awesome! If you're a gamer, or just like anything FUN, you should LOVE this movie! Seriously, there are so many gamers out there--all the WoW players alone should be seeing this movie, and that would totally make this a box office smash. Plus the soundtrack just rocks! As soon as we got home from watching the movie I downloaded it. Watch the trailer and decide for yourself.

Small House Projects

This summer has been brutal in terms of heat and humidity, so Mark decided to build a screen door to help with airflow in the house. We were naive and thought that building a screen door from scratch would be the cheapest route. After we built the door, my parents found a screen door at a garage sale for $10. Gah!

Above, my mom is helping put the finishing touches on the door by painting it white. Ironically, she is using some of the paint samples we got for the interior, so the door will match our white trim inside the house! :)

Below is a picture of the lovely new door in place! I think it turned out really nicely. Because it opens towards the wall, it is a lot more difficult to flip the light switch for the garage, so Mark also installed a motion sensor. Now every time you open the screen door to go into the garage the light turns on automatically. It's like living in the future!

Eat Local

I saw this truck driving around Ann Arbor one day, and I was curious, so I looked up the organization. Eat Local Eat Natural seems like a pretty cool group! It's cool that they tell you which restaurants are getting produce from local farms, although their blog leaves a lot to be desired (2 posts: Oct. 2008 and April 2010).

Local Dirt is another website that helps you find local farms / farmer's markets. I do have to say that Mark and I have gone to our local farmer's market, and it has been a little disappointing--mostly crafts and jams, and not so much with fresh produce--but when we went yesterday, there were also lots of little kids dressed like fairies, so that was fun. :) On the Local Dirt site is an interesting article called Farmer's Market 2.0, which takes place in Detroit, at the Detroit Eastern Market.

Now be healthy and enjoy some fresh fruits and vegetables!
